ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Caldwell-Luc’s operation has been performed for more than 100 years to manage the maxillary disease. It is not uncommon to check CT scans after Caldwell-Luc’s operation in case of recurrence. The objective of this study is to evaluate various changes of maxillary sinuses on postoperative CT scans after Caldwell-Luc’s operation. Materials and Method: We evaluated CT scans of 51 maxillary sinuses after Caldwell-Luc’s operations and classified them into 3 groups. The first group was partial opacification of antrum due to fibro-osseous proliferation. The second group was total opacification of antrum. The third group was total loss of antral lumen due to bony contraction. In addition to 3 groups, we evaluated the presence of compartmentalization and postoperative maxillary cyst. Results: The result was the first group in 14 (27.4%), the second group in 26 (51.0%), and the third group in 11 (21.6%). The incidence of compartmentalization was 23.5% (12 sinuses) and that of postoperative maxillary cyst was 11.8% (6 sinuses). Conclusion: It seems necessary to pay attention to various postoperative changes of maxillary sinuses and to make efforts to resolve the lesions. (J Clinical Otolaryngol 2000;11:68–72)
